BIOGRAPHY

Taku Obata was born in Saitama in 1980. He completed his BFA in Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006, followed by an MFA in Sculpture from the same institution in 2008. Active also as a breakdancer, he self-identifies as a B-BOY sculptor. Working across sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography, his practice centers on the dancer as subject. He is particularly known for his wooden sculpture series “B-BOY,” featuring figures in sportswear and oversized sunglasses. These works are constructed to stand without a pedestal — not merely tracing the outlines of a pose, but faithfully rendering the distribution of weight and balance of limbs that make such a stance physically possible. In his paintings, Obata translates his own bodily movement as a dancer directly onto the canvas, transmitting kinetic energy through brush and finger so that the motif itself appears to dance. He received the Grand Prize at Tokyo Wonder Wall in 2008 and held a solo exhibition at the Nakamura Keith Haring Art Museum in 2012. In 2017, he collaborated with NikeLab, producing works and appearing in a film, leading to numerous subsequent collaborations with fashion brands. In 2020, his work was exhibited at Japan House London as part of a residency program. He has shown widely both in Japan and internationally.
