Tomonari HASHIMOTO

solo exhibition

details - JP

Hashimoto is known for his massive ceramic works with unique metallic textures, and has exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions internationally.

The massive geometric forms, including spheres and monolithic pieces, are entirely shaped by hand-twisting layers of clay and finished with a metallic glaze before being slowly fired in an enormous brick kiln. Despite their inorganic form, the hand-crafted shapes contrast with the huge, massive objects and human physicality, and the beautiful metallic surfaces change their expressions with the passage of light and the lapse of a long period of time.

In this exhibition, the artist will present mainly large rectangular columns made of ceramic and mortar. The solid, massive cubes have the impression of monuments created with a certain meaning, as if they were released from gravity or placed here after having been transported from somewhere else over many years. The works connote a contradictory nature of weight and a light floating sensation created by the contrast and combination of materials, which leave a feeling full of questions with the viewers.

I was obsessed with origami, plastic models, temples and shrines as a child. My father, who was a sculptor, made life-size plaster casts and bronze statues, which I saw every day. I loved looking at the plants and trees in the garden from the window of my house, the mountains stretching out behind it, and the changing landscape from the car window. Such childhood experiences are reflected in the background of my work.
Regarding my approach to work, I am conscious of the distance between my personal thoughts and feelings, and yet I want to create works in a way that allows the viewer to feel the artist’s passion that remains. I place value on the fluctuations that cannot be measured by numbers, the appearance of things, and the environment that surrounds their existence.  – Tomonari Hashimoto
