グループ展　Echo windowsに寄せて

相変わらずグラフィティを描きながら街を徘徊している。
まだまだ自分の見た事がない、もしくは知らない面白い出来事、人や物に偶然出会えている事を嬉しく思う。全ては街が解決してくれて、悩んだことがある時は街に出てひたすら歩きグラフィティを描く事にしている。
そうしてここ数年はそういう瞬間を作品というモノに落とし込む事を続けている。

自分にしか見えていないような変な人、時間の止まったような場所、いつからそこに置いてあるかわかないゴミ、謎の匂いや音、自分しか来てないであろう空間。

今回の展覧会に声を掛けさせてもらった4人の作家からも同じような事を感じられる。
国や性別、世代も作風もバラバラだけど作品にはそういった瞬間がある。

自分にしか見えていない線や図形、偶然できたズレや痕跡、作品から見えてくる手触りや聞こえてくる微音やゆっくり流れる時間、自分しか知らないであろう気持ちのいい曲線。

みる人によってはわかりづらく、ただ個人の美学にしかすぎように感じるが、そういう瞬間や物事を知ったり、感じれるようになることが生きていく事をほんの少しだけ良くしていくのだと思う。

この度parcelでは昨年弊廊で個展を開催したDIEGOによるキュレーション展「Echo Windows」を開催いたします。本展では、平面表現を主軸に置きながらも、画家やコンテンポラリーアーティストという言葉には括れない活動をする、作品スタイル、拠点、年齢などの異なるバックグラウンドを持つ5人の作家が集います。

DIEGOは街中で何気なく目にするモノをユーモラスに擬人化したキャラクターなどを抽象的に描いています。スタイルや手法のみならずグラフィティの価値観は作品の核となっており、ビルの間や空き地など多くの人に見過ごされるような「都市の隙間」、そこにある道具や打ち捨てられたようにただ存在している物などはインスピレーション源のひとつです。

染色家の宮入圭太は、布や和紙に型紙と糊を用いて染色する型染めの手法で制作をしています。民藝思想はもとより、90年代に熱中したグラフィティや、現代美術など様々なカルチャーや美学に基づいた作風、ユニークで遊び心のあるモチーフや独学で身につけた手法を取り入れた宮入の表現は、近年国内外で注目を集めています。

中島あかねは主に水彩、アクリル、クレヨンなどを用いた表現をする作家です。線を引く、色を置くというシンプルな行為を重ねることで、身近にありながらも日常生活においては見落とされるような抽象的感覚や無意識的領域を探るようにして制作・発表を続けています。

金沢を拠点とするLAKAは、グラフィックやインテリアのデザイン、また、金沢のインディペンデント アートスペースNNの運営に携わりながら、作家として活動しています。近年続ける「FLAT PLATE」シリーズでの表現において、文字という抽象的・記号的なフォルムをさらに解体し、断片化する、連続させる、削る、塗り重ねるというプロセスをパネルの画面上に重ねることで、かたちを探る行為そのものが絵画表現として現れています。

1994年生まれのTyler G Ormsbyは、サンフランシスコのベイエリアに在住する作家です。主に油画、ドローイングを中心に陶芸などジャンルやスタイルに囚われず制作を続けています。想像の余地を残した象徴的なワンシーンのような風景、無骨とも言えるような力強く絵具が重なり合う抽象絵画などを制作し、精力的に発表・活動の場を広げています。

この5人の作家の作品の形式やスタイルは全く異なるものですが、制作プロセスにおいて手作業や道具によるブレやエラーを作品に取り込む直感的・身体的感覚や、計画とは対にある素朴さや無作為性などが彼らの作品に共通した重要な要素となっています。佇まいの美しさを見つめ精神性を追求する5人の作家の持つ美学や響き合いを感じていただけましたら幸いです。

Text for “Echo Windows”

I continue to wander through the city, drawing graffiti as usual. I find joy in encountering interesting events, people, and things that I have not yet seen or known. Everything is resolved by the city, and when I face troubles, I go out into the city and walk endlessly, dedicating myself to drawing graffiti.
Over the past few years, I have been trying to capture these moments in my work.

Strange people that only I can see, places where time seems to have stopped, trash that I don’t know how long it has been there, mysterious smells and sounds, spaces that only I seem to visit.

I could feel the same sentiment from the four artists I asked to participate in this exhibition.
Despite differences in nationality, gender, generation, and artistic style, there are moments like these in their works.

Lines and shapes that seem visible only to me, accidental shifts and traces, the texture revealed by the artwork, faint sounds, and the slow flow of time—curves in a pleasant melody that only I would know.

For some viewers, it may be difficult to understand, and may seem to be nothing more than a personal aesthetic. However, I believe that knowing and experiencing such moments or things even in the slightest can make life a little better.

parcel is pleased to present “Echo Windows,” an exhibition curated by DIEGO, who had a solo exhibition at our gallery in 2022. In this exhibition, we bring together five artists with diverse backgrounds, including variations in their artistic styles, bases, and ages. While the primary focus of the exhibition is on two-dimensional expressions, these artists defy easy categorization as painters or contemporary artists due to the multifaceted nature of their work.

DIEGO creates abstract paintings that humorously personify everyday objects commonly seen in the city. Not only in terms of style and technique, but also in the artist’s values, graffiti plays a central role, drawing inspiration from often-overlooked “urban gaps” like spaces between buildings or vacant lots. Everyday objects and tools that seem to be abandoned in these spaces serve as one of the sources of inspiration for the artist’s work.

The dyer Keita Miyairi employs the resist-dyeing technique, using pattern stencils and glue, to create his works on fabrics and Japanese paper. Drawing from folk art philosophies and inspired by a wide range of cultures, aesthetics, and art forms, including graffiti from his passionate involvement in the 1990s and contemporary art, Miyairi’s artistic style incorporates unique, playful motifs. His mastery of self-taught techniques has contributed to his distinct expression, which has garnered attention both domestically and internationally in recent years.

Akane Nakajima primarily works with watercolors, acrylics, and crayons. Through the simple act of drawing lines and placing colors, she explores abstract sensations and the subconscious, often overlooked in everyday life. Her artistic process involves layering and repeating these acts to create and present her work.

LAKA, based in Kanazawa, is involved in graphic and interior design. Simultaneously, he manages the independent art space NN in Kanazawa while pursuing his career as an artist. In his ongoing “FLAT PLATE” series, he disassembles and fragments the abstract and symbolic form of letters. Through a process of layering, scraping, and overlaying on the canvas, he explores the act of shaping itself as a form of artistic expression.

Tyler G Ormsby, born in 1994, is an artist residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. His creative work spans various mediums, with a focus on oil painting and drawing. He creates scenes reminiscent of symbolic snapshots with room for imagination, as well as bold and layered abstract paintings. He actively presents his work and expands his artistic activities.

Although the five artists have entirely different formats and styles, they share essential elements in their work, such as an intuitive and physical sense that incorporates handmade elements, tools, errors, and a simplicity and randomness that contrasts with planning. We hope you can appreciate the aesthetics and resonances of these five artists who explore the beauty of their surroundings and pursue spirituality.
