parcelでは、4月2日より安野谷 昌穂個展 “Earth Song, Birth Gong”を開催いたします。
安野谷にとって2年ぶりの個展となる本展では、スケールある新作大小様々なペインティング作品を発表いたします。

本展で発表される作品は2020年頃〜2022年に制作されているものが中心になります。それ以前にも、世界中では現在と変わらず限りなく出来事が起こっていたはずなのですが、コロナ以降、世界はこれまでより一層混沌とし、日々耳を塞ぎきれない程の情報が入ってくるように思えます。報道される現実や噂話に限らず、現象に映し出された人の美しさや醜さ、または個人的な人間関係の出来事や、春になって日差しが気持ちいい、などといった様々な性質の事象が今同時に起こっている、という感触が以前に増して強くなったようにも感じられます。多様な情報はこちらの意思に構わず日々体の中に入り込んできますが、自身の内に蓄積したそれらの輪郭をなぞり、消化するのは容易ではありません。

安野谷の作品は、ペインティング、ドローイング、コラージュ、パフォーマンス、写真など、多様な手法を用いており、それぞれの作品の表情は大きく違います。本展にて発表されるパネルに描かれた作品では、土を耕し作物を育てるように、もしくは子供が枝で地面を掘り返して遊ぶように、パネルの上に石灰を盛り、削る、描く、重ねる、という行為が何層にも繰り返されています。その一方で、キャンバス作品では、空気を内包し、音のような何かに色をつけるようにして、アクリル・油彩などが優しく何度も重ねられています。どの作品においても、身の周りに起こる出来事、環境を知覚することで安野谷に引き起こされた感覚が発端として描かれており、それらの感覚は言語的思考とは別の場所(安野谷の言葉では 思考の裏側にある無意識の領域)から丁寧に呼び起こされ、最適なマテリアルや手法を手探りながら色が重ねられ形作られているのです。

各シリーズ、作品は極めて実験的に制作されていますが、これは安野谷自身が語るように「常に初心者であること」を大切にしているためです。プリミティブな線や形状、予期せぬ偶発的な色味や現象を作品に活かすため、あえて耐えず慣れない技法に手を出し、組み合わせながら独特な世界観を構成していくのです。それは彼が自分の周辺で知覚した時の感覚を、純度高く支持体に留めておくための行為とも言えます。

展覧会タイトルにあるように、本展では、地(地球、地面、地上)、生(エネルギー、死、命)のイメージが作品に表出しています。今ここで我々が吸ってる東京の空気と安野谷の住む兵庫、戦争が起こっている別の場所の煙たい空気は全て繋がっており、同じものであるということ。生死を巡るエネルギーと、それらを包んでいるもののかたちとしての地球、人体、家、動物や虫のすみか、子宮もそれと等しくあること。森羅万象、全て同様であり連続しているという感覚を安野谷は絵画を通して明るみにします。

作品を通して、具象化することのない事象や作家個人が感じた言葉のつかないイメージ、そして絵画の持つエネルギーを感じて頂ければ幸いです。

Earth Song, Birth Gong 2022 Masaho Anotani

parcel is pleased to present “Earth Song, Birth Gong,” a solo exhibition by Masaho Anotani starting April 2. This will be Anotani’s first solo exhibition in two years, and he will present a variety of new large-scale paintings of various sizes.

The works presented in this exhibition will be those primarily produced between 2020 and 2022. Before this period, there must have been endless events happening around the world, just as there are today, but after the global pandemic, the world seems to have become even more chaotic than before, and we seem to receive more information than our ears can endure on a daily basis. Not only the reality and gossip reported in the media, but also the beauty and ugliness of people reflected in phenomena, events in personal relationships, and the pleasant feeling of sunshine in spring, etc., all seem to be happening at the same time. A variety of information enters our body every day, regardless of our intentions, and it is not always easy to trace and digest the contours of the information that has accumulated in our own bodies.

Anotani’s work uses a variety of techniques, including painting, drawing, collage, performance, and photography, and each piece has a very different look and feel. In the works on panels presented in this exhibition, the artist repeats the process of piling limestones, grinding, drawing, and layering on the panel, as if plowing the soil to grow crops, or as if a child were digging the ground with a branch. 

On the other hand, in the canvas works, materials such as acrylics and oils, are gently layered repeatedly, as if were to encapsulate air or to add color to something like sound. In each work, Anotani’s senses are triggered by his perception of the environment and events that occur around him, and these senses are carefully evoked from a different place than verbal thought (in Anotani’s words, from the unconscious realm behind thought), while colors are layered and shaped as he seeks for the most appropriate materials and techniques. 

Each series and work is created in an extremely experimental manner, as Anotani himself says, he values the importance of  “constantly having a beginners mindset”. In order to make use of primitive lines and shapes, unexpected accidental colors and phenomena in his works, he dares to try unfamiliar techniques and combine them to compose his unique worldview. It can be said that this is an act to keep the sensation when he perceives his surroundings on his canvases with a high degree of purity.

As stated in the exhibition title, the images of earth (earth, ground, terrestrial) and life (energy, death, life) are represented throughout the works in this exhibition. The air we currently breathe here in Tokyo and the air of Hyogo, where Anotani lives, and the smoky air of another place where an invasion is taking place, are all connected and  come from the same origin. For Anotani, the energy surrounding life and death, and the frames that embody them such as the earth, the human body, shelters and houses, habitats of animals and insects, and even the womb are all equally connected. Through his paintings, the artist sheds light to the sense that all things in the universe are equal, and united..

Through his works, we hope the viewers can feel an unrealizable phenomena, the indescribable images perceived by the artist, and the energy of paintings.
