山内聡美は音楽、ファッション、その他カルチャー誌などへの様々なコミッションワークを行いながら、自身の作品を10年以上に渡り発表してきました。近年は、現在拠点にしている東京をはじめ、幼少期を過ごしたフロリダや静岡などの様々な土地で撮影を行い、時代を感じさせる古びた看板や造形物、偶然でくわした少しおかしな状況や、人の気配のない建造物などを主なモチーフとしています。それらの写真は被写体の存在感が写実的に捉えられており、淡白なドキュメントのような表情も持ちながら、ノスタルジックかつ非現実的なイメージが表現されています。

また、山内が近年取り組む作品に、スマートフォン画面のスクリーンショットを元に制作しているシリーズがあります。素材となっているのはAIカメラによって道に沿って無感情にスキャニングされ、場所の情報を伝えるという実用的なインターネットツールとして無数に存在する画像ですが、時に構図や色のバランスが偶然的に整った、山内にとっての「完璧な瞬間」に出会います。この作品シリーズは、山内自身の幼少期の朧げな記憶を元にアナログカメラで撮影した過去の写真作品と、インターネットのマップ上に無数に存在する画像をリンクさせ、インターネット上で発見する「完璧な瞬間」にどこかノスタルジーを感じながらキャプチャーしていくことから始まっていますが、その懐かしさは本物の記憶とどこで結びついたものであるのか定かではありません。そして、それらのキャプチャーされた画像に対面した鑑賞者は、写真が撮影された背景に想像を広げ、撮影者が写真に収めたノスタルジックな感情を読み取ろうとするかもしれません。そこに説明がない限り、もしくは鑑賞者が注意深く鑑賞しない限り、単なる「綺麗な景色を写した写真」として受け止められ、そして多くは見過ごされ、ドキュメントされた写真・鑑賞者の間には大きなすれ違いが生じています。

今回発表する作品の素材となっている画像も山内にとっては何の縁もなく、訪れたこともない異国の風景で、スマートフォンの画面をスワイプさせるような淡々とした印象で並べられています。ギャラリーに訪れた鑑賞者は、まず作品を一目見て、やはり綺麗な風景写真として捉えるでしょう。そこから撮影者の意図を読み解こうと注意深く写真を鑑賞するかもしれませんが、その写真が撮られた日付や場所は鑑賞者には明らかになることはなく、場所や時間が分からない以上、現在・現実の場所の情報を伝えるインターネットツールの画像という本来の意味からも離れてしまっています。展覧会タイトル「WHEREABOUTS」とあるように、本展覧会の作品は特定の場所や時間を示さず、それらの写真は我々の感情にどこか軽い揺さぶりをかけるものではありながら、鑑賞者から非常に遠い場所のドキュメントとして残されています。そして、これらの作品は現実世界の出来事と、それらの情報を手のひらに入るスマートフォンの中で無限に手に入れることになった現代人のあり方を示しているようでもあります。

The body of work by Satomi Yamauchi spans over a decade and encompasses a diverse range of commissions in music, fashion, and various cultural publications, while also featuring her personal artistic output. Her recent photographic series, shot in various locations including her childhood haunts in Florida and Shizuoka, as well as her current base in Tokyo, often showcases nostalgic and dreamlike imagery of weathered signs, sculptures, and deserted buildings. The photographs capture the palpable presence of the subjects with a realistic sensibility, while simultaneously evoking a sense of wistful and surreal imagery.

In addition, Yamauchi has embarked on a recent series that utilizes screenshots from smartphone screens as its motif. The images, originally generated by an AI camera as a practical internet tool to scan along roads and relay information about a location, often feature coincidental compositions and color balances that align with Yamauchi’s vision of a “perfect moment.” This series connects Yamauchi’s childhood memories, captured through analogue photography, with the multitude of images present on internet maps, and invites viewers to capture that same nostalgic feeling of discovering the “perfect moment” on the internet, even though it remains unclear how this nostalgia relates to authentic memories.

The exhibition titled “WHEREABOUTS” showcases Yamauchi’s recent works that present unfamiliar landscapes from foreign places that she has never visited, displayed in a seemingly monotonous manner, as if swiping through a screen. Upon first glance, viewers may perceive the photographs as merely beautiful landscape images. However, upon closer examination, the viewer will note that the photographs offer no concrete information about the location or date they were taken, thus deviating from the original purpose of the internet tool as a practical source of information. As the title suggests, the exhibition does not pinpoint any specific location or time, instead leaving the viewer with a subtle and lingering sense of displacement and prompting them to contemplate the work further. The works appear to capture not only the events of the real world, but also the way in which modern individuals have access to an infinite amount of information at their fingertips, portraying our contemporary way of life.
