スマート美術館で開催される「境界を越えて：現代中国美術30年」展は、文化・学術機関の内外で成長を続ける中国現代美術の、揺るぎない適応力に焦点を当てています。過去30年間に美術館が収集した作品、アーカイブ資料、印刷物、そして新作を一堂に会し、「境界を越えて」展は、アーティストたちが文化、環境、政治といった様々な領域において、いかに物理的な制約を乗り越え、挑戦してきたかを考察します。流動性という戦略を通して、彼らは急速に変化する中国国内だけでなく、より広範な世界的な不確実性の中でも、支配的な社会的期待や政治的覇権に立ち向かいます。そうすることで、「境界を越えて」展は、儚い瞬間、環境、そして行動を改めて見つめ直し、繋がり、立ち返り、記憶を呼び起こすよう私たちを促します。

The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago is presenting “Beyond Boundaries: Three Decades of Contemporary Chinese Art at the Smart.” Artist Lu Yang is among the featured participants in this exhibition, which has been on view since March 29th.
“Beyond Boundaries: Three Decades of Contemporary Chinese Art at the Smart” reflects on the enduring resilience of contemporary art from China as it continues to grow within and beyond cultural and academic institutions. Bringing together artworks acquired by the Museum over the last three decades, archival materials, ephemera, as well as new work, “Beyond Boundaries” explores how artists navigate and challenge physical limitations across cultural, environmental, and political terrains. Through strategies of fluidity, they confront dominant social expectations and political hegemonies – not only within a rapidly transforming China, but also amid broader global uncertainties. In doing so, “Beyond Boundaries” invites us to revisit fleeting moments, environments, and actions, and urges us to reconnect, return, and remember.

上海生まれ。東京と上海を拠点に活動する現代アーティストです。仏教哲学の深い影響を受けた彼の作品は、生命、テクノロジー、そしてスピリチュアリティ（精神性）といったテーマを探求しています。数々の注目すべき作品の中でも、「DOKU 」シリーズでは、自身のデジタルアバターを用いて現代の人間社会の問題に向き合い、仏教の智慧を広めることを目的としています。制作においては、コンピューターグラフィックス（CG）技術やゲームエンジンを幅広く活用し、科学者、心理学者、デザイナー、音楽プロデューサーなど、さまざまな分野の専門家と協力して作品を制作しています。
近年の個展としては、ルイ・ヴィトン美術館（パリ）、ムデック美術館（ミラノ）、クンストハレ美術館（バーゼル）、パレ・ポピュレール（ベルリン）、ARoSオーフス美術館（デンマーク）、クンストパレイス美術館（ドイツ）、クリーブランド現代美術館（アメリカ）などで開催。また、2015年と2022年のヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレに参加し、その他の主要な美術館での展覧会やビエンナーレ／トリエンナーレにも出展。2019年には「BMW Art Journey」、2022年には「ドイツ銀行・年間最優秀アーティスト賞（Deutsche Bank Artist of the Year）」を受賞。
Born in Shanghai, China. Lu Yang is a contemporary interdisciplinary artist based in Tokyo and Shanghai. His work, deeply influenced by Buddhist philosophy, explores themes of life, technology, and spirituality. Among his many notable works, the recent “DOKU” series he uses his digital persona to address contemporary human issues and aims to spread Buddhist wisdom. Lu Yang extensively utilizes computer graphics (CG) technology and game engines as creative media, collaborating with experts from various fields such as scientists, psychologists, designers, and music producers.
Lu Yang’s works have been presented at leading global institutions including the Louis Vuitton Foundation (Paris), Mudec Museum (Milan), Kunsthalle Basel (Switzerland), Palais Populaire (Berlin), ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (Denmark), Kunstpalais Erlangen (Germany), and MOCA Cleveland (USA). Lu Yang was also invited to the Venice Biennale in 2015 and 2022.
Lu Yang is the recipient of the 2019 BMW Art Journey and was named Deutsche Bank Artist of the Year in 2022, honoring Lu Yang’s groundbreaking integration of technology, philosophy, and spiritual inquiry in contemporary art.
